With the world rapidly changing, it’s important to consider factors such as stability, healthcare, culture, education, and infrastructure when determining the best city to live in. Fortunately, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released its highly anticipated Global Liveability Index 2023, ranking 172 cities based on these criteria. Let’s explore the findings and discover the best city to live in this year.

For the second consecutive year, Vienna, Austria, has claimed the top spot as the best city to live in the world. Boasting an unsurpassed combination of stability, good infrastructure, strong education and healthcare services, and a vibrant culture and entertainment scene, Vienna continues to impress. However, it’s worth mentioning that the city’s lack of major sporting events is one of its few downsides. Copenhagen, Denmark, closely follows Vienna, maintaining its position as an exceptional performer in terms of stability, infrastructure, and cultural offerings.

The Australian Rise

Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, secured the third and fourth positions, respectively, in the Global Liveability Index 2023. These Australian cities have experienced fluctuations in rankings due to the impact of the pandemic. However, they have rebounded admirably, with improved healthcare scores since last year’s report. These advancements demonstrate their resilience and ability to address the challenges posed by turbulent times.

The Canadian and Swiss Presence

Canada and Switzerland also make their presence felt in the top 10 best cities to live in. Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto represent Canada, showcasing their excellence in various categories such as stability, healthcare, and infrastructure. Zurich and Geneva, two Swiss cities renowned for their high standard of living, also secure spots in the top 10. These cities consistently deliver on their reputation for quality of life and overall livability.

The Best Cities to Live in the U.S.

While the United States did not make the top 20 list of best cities to live in globally, several American cities still offer exceptional living conditions. Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii, takes the lead as the best city to live in the U.S., ranking 25th overall. Honolulu demonstrates strengths across all categories, particularly in educational facilities and stability. Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Washington D.C. round out the top five best places to live in the United States. Notably, these cities are mid-sized and perform exceptionally well, showcasing their appeal to residents seeking a high quality of life.

The Rise of Asia-Pacific Cities

The Global Liveability Index 2023 highlights a significant rise in rankings for cities in the Asia-Pacific region. Eight of the top 10 cities that have experienced the most substantial positive changes are located in this area. Wellington, New Zealand, soars 35 places to secure the 23rd position, while Auckland, New Zealand, climbs an impressive 25 spots to claim the 10th position. Hanoi, Vietnam, also shines, ascending 20 places to reach the 129th spot. These advancements reflect a return to normalcy after the impact of the pandemic on these cities.

European Challenges

European cities, despite their historical prominence, face challenges in the Global Liveability Index 2023. Western European cities experienced a decline due to workers’ strikes and civil unrest, negatively impacting their stability ratings. Additionally, they struggled to match the progress made by cities in Asia and the Middle East. However, it’s important to note that European cities still occupy four of the top 10 positions, showcasing their enduring appeal and quality of life.

The Best Cities to Live in the World: A Summary

In summary, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index 2024 provides valuable insights into the best cities to live in worldwide. Vienna, with its unbeatable combination of stability, infrastructure, education, and healthcare services, claims the top spot for the second year running. Australian cities Melbourne and Sydney make a strong showing, demonstrating their resilience and commitment to improving healthcare services. Canada and Switzerland continue to impress with their cities’ livability, while the United States showcases mid-sized cities as top contenders. Finally, the rise of Asia-Pacific cities and the challenges faced by European cities add further depth to the global liveability landscape.
